Chapter 27: The Authorâs threat
I had this unsettling idea that someone was playing a game with me. Three months had passed since my media conference in which I had announced that I had transferred yellow paint from my dream reality to my real life reality. Within a few days of the announcement the media had lost interest in the case of my missing friends and in my story. Other, more sensational, stories replaced mine. That was fair enough. Thatâs how the media world functions.
Two months after the media conference, I told my bodyguards that I no longer needed them. We had a big party and celebrated that I was still alive. Most of Tonyâs gang members were at the party. There were also the two private detectives I had hired and one police detective. I hadnât expected him and asked him how he knew about the party.
He replied with a question of his own. âDo you really want to know the full truth or would you prefer an answer thatâs not exactly a lie, but also not the full truth?â
âThe full truth, please.â
âWe have shadowed you since you gave that crazy media conference.â
âWhy?â
âFor your protection,â the policeman replied.
âWell, thank you. But I had protection.â
âWe know. â
I thought about what the man had said before I responded, âI had four bodyguards who I believe are very competent. I canât believe that the police had me under surveillance. My bodyguards would have noticed something.â
âWe know you had four bodyguards, but I canât tell you more about the surveillance and protection we provided,â the policeman replied. âThatâs the full truth. And the fact that I canât tell you more is part of the full truth.â
âA truthful admission that the truth you told me is incomplete. Is that what you are saying?â
âYes, thatâs a good way of putting it.â
OK, I thought, the missing part of the truth is probably straightforward. One of my bodyguards leaked information to the police. Perhaps heâs even a police officer. I had been wondering why the police never showed any interest in me and in what I was up to. They were well informed. But what the heck! No point in getting pissed off about it now, after the event.
The party was a hell of a good one. There were plenty of beautiful girls I had never seen before. One of them insisted that we have sex, which we did. I was wondering a bit whether she was a girl Tony had arranged for me and paid for. Or maybe the four bodyguards had something to do with it. What the heck! It didnât matter. The sex was good .
It was after the party that I developed that fixation that someone was playing games with me. I woke up one morning with yellow paint on the back of my left hand. I was certain that I didnât dream of painting the night before. But even if I had, I knew as well as everybody else that paint canât be transferred from dream reality to real life reality.
